WHAT A QR CODE ACTUALLY IS

A QR code is just text, stored as a grid of black and white squares instead of letters. Point a camera at it and the phone reads the text back out. If that text happens to look like a web address, the phone offers to open it — that is the whole trick. It can hold a link, a phone number, a WiFi password, a plain message, or an address.

WHY THE CORNERS LOOK LIKE THAT

The three big squares in the corners tell the scanner where the code is and which way up it is, which is why a QR code works upside down and at an angle. The pattern also carries error correction, so a code still scans with a chunk missing, a logo over the middle, or a coffee ring across it. That redundancy is why they survive being printed on cheap paper and stuck on a wall.

PRACTICAL RULES

• Shorter text makes a simpler, more reliable code — shorten long links first
• Keep a clear white margin around it or scanners struggle
• Dark code on a light background, not the reverse
• For print, download the largest size and never scale a small one up
• Always scan it yourself before printing a hundred copies

A SAFETY NOTE

A QR code hides its destination — you cannot read a link before you scan it. That is exactly why scam codes stuck over real ones on parking meters and restaurant tables work so well. Check the address your phone shows you before you tap it, and be suspicious of a code that asks for a payment or a login.
